Why the midday walk is the most booked visit in Northern Virginia

People assume pet sitting is a vacation service. Most of the standing bookings we run are nothing of the kind. They are ordinary weeks, for people who live in Alexandria, Arlington or Fairfax and work somewhere that makes coming home at lunchtime impossible. Tysons is a commute. The District is a bigger one. Neither is going to get shorter, and the dog is still at home doing the arithmetic on how long it has been.

What nine hours actually asks of a dog

A healthy adult dog can physically hold on for a long stretch. That is not really the question. The question is what a long stretch of nothing does to an animal that is awake for it. Dogs left too long without a break get to the door frantic, drink too fast when they finally can, and start finding jobs for themselves in the meantime: the trim on the door, the corner of the rug, the barking that your neighbour has mentioned twice now. Puppies, seniors, and anything on a diuretic simply cannot do it at all.

What the visit is

Somebody comes to the house in the middle of the day. The dog goes out, gets a walk sized to what he can actually do rather than to the clock, has a bathroom break, gets fresh water, and any midday feeding or medication happens the way your notes say. The house is left the way it was found. The photo goes out when the visit ends, which usually means it is on your phone before you are out of an afternoon meeting.

Who books it

• People with a new puppy who cannot yet hold a full workday, which is most puppies.
• Owners of a senior dog whose bladder stopped negotiating a year ago.
• Anyone whose dog is on medication that has to land at a specific time.
• People who came home to something chewed and worked out why.
• Households where the commute changed and the old routine quietly stopped working.

It works best as a standing booking

Set the days once and it runs the same every week without you asking again. The dog learns the pattern, which is most of the benefit: the difference between a break he can rely on and a surprise visitor. And because it is the same sitter, somebody who is not you is watching the same dog every week and will notice the limp, or the untouched water, or the week he stopped wanting the walk.
